- 1 cup whole wheat flour or all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- A pinch of salt
- 1 cup of cold water
- ¼ cup neutral-tasting oil e.g. Sunflower oil
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice or apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
Preheat your oven at 200 degrees Celsius. If you are using a microwave oven in the convection mode, preheat at 180 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes.
Sift the dry ingredients - flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt together.
Separately, mix the sugar into the cold water until it dissolves and becomes a homogenous mixture. Add to this the lime juice and vanilla extract. Mix very well.
Add this combination to the mix of dry ingredients and mix it all together well enough to make a lump-free, smooth batter. The batter would not be too thick or too thin.
Take a 6” cake tin and line it with parchment. Alternatively, you can also generously coat the sides and bottom of the tin with melted butter or oil.
Pour the cake batter into the tin and shake it and tap the tin onto the kitchen counter to release any air bubbles.
- Bake the cake at 180 degrees C for 30-35 minutes if you are using a microwave in the convection mode. If you are using an oven, bake at 200 degrees Celsius for 35-40 minutes.
Check the center of the cake by inserting a toothpick or knife. If it comes out clean and batter-free, the cake is ready! Get it out of the oven and let it cool, preferably on a wired rack. Once it’s cooled to room temperature, you can remove it from the cake tin and serve it.
The vinegar and baking soda have been added as an egg replacement to help the cake rise. You can alternatively use 1 egg and opt-out of putting in vinegar and baking soda.
So, there you have it! We guarantee you this recipe is super simple to follow and will give you a delicious result too! Follow the recipe closely and you will have the best homemade chocolate cake to enjoy with your loved ones!
